Scope of the Conference

The outbreak of Covid-19 has severely affected the economy, society, health, education, and governance in both the developed and developing countries. Covid-19 has affected not just key industries globally, but also has caused sociological and socioeconomic implications. The lives of individuals, households, and business entities have been disrupted due to continuous lockdowns and international border closings. According to the IMF's April 2021 World Economic Outlook Report, the global economy contracted by 3.5 percent in 2020, a 7 percent drop from 3.4 percent growth anticipated in October 2019 (IMF, 2020). A comparison of data for April 2020 vs December 2019 reveals that industrial production fell globally by 20 percent on an average (UNIDO, 2020).

Additionally, there were unprecedented global employment losses of 114 million jobs in 2020 relative to 2019. Moreover, the employment losses were higher for women (5.0 per cent) than for men and for young workers (8.7 per cent) than for older workers (ILO, 2021). In monetary terms, the global labor income fell by an estimated US$3.7 trillion (using 2019 market exchange rates) in 2020 relative to 2019. This corresponds to 4.4 per cent of global GDP in 2019 (ILO, 2021). Global economy could lose over US$4 trillion due to Covid-19 impact on tourism.

Developing countries have borne the biggest brunt of the pandemic’s impact on tourism. They suffered the largest reductions in tourist arrivals in 2020, estimated at between 60% and 80% (UNCTAD, 2021). The effect of Covid-19 proved to be a double-edged sword to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. They were hit not only by the crisis of the pandemic but also decline in oil prices, both of which led to drastic fall in their revenues and negatively affected their position in the global financial market.

This multi-disciplinary conference aims to bring together scientists, researchers, and policymakers from different segments of economy, social sciences, and humanities for discussion and debate on the implications of the Covid-19 to the economy and society at large.

Furthermore, this event would assess the effectiveness of the measures undertaken by the stakeholders to mitigate the overall impact of the pandemic. This conference will serve as an international platform for exchanging views, insights, and experiences of Covid-19 across the industries and the world.
