René Csuk, born 1958 in Zurich/Switzerland, is Austrian by birth.  He started to study Technical Chemistry/Biochemistry at the University of Technology in Graz (Austria) in 1976, earned the diploma in 1981 (with distinction) and completed his Ph.D. in 1984 (with distinction) under the guidance of Prof. Hans Weidmann dealing with the synthesis of immunomodulatory drugs. After two years more in Graz as a lecturer for NMR spectroscopy, he joined Professor Andrea Vasella’s group at the University of Zurich as a senior research associate, then moved on to the University of Heidelberg, and finished his habilitation in Pharmaceutical Chemistry 1992 with Professor Richard Neidlein being his mentor. He worked from 1992-1995 as a Professor for Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Heidelberg, and finally moved to the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg in 1995 as a full professor of Organic Chemistry. Between 1996 and 2003 he served as dean of the faculty, and was appointed as a member of the board of directors of the “Biocenter Halle” in 2001. Since 1995 he serves as managing director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry and since 2017 also as managing director of the “Biocenter Halle”.

His main research interests are the synthesis of natural product inspired bioactive molecules (antitumor-active, enzyme inhibitors, anti-Alzheimer compounds) and the analysis of ancient dyes. He has published > 230 scientific papers.

Anne Osbourn is a Project Leader at the John Innes Centre and Director of the Norwich Research Park Industrial Biotechnology Alliance. Her research focuses on plant-derived natural products - function, synthesis, mechanisms of metabolic diversification and metabolic engineering. An important advance from the Osbourn laboratory has been the discovery that in plant genomes the genes needed to make particular natural products are often organised in clusters like ‘beads on a string’, a finding that has greatly accelerated our ability to find new pathways and chemistries of potential importance for the development of drugs and other useful compounds.  She has established a synthetic biology platform based on transient plant expression that provides rapid access to previously inaccessible natural products and analogs at gram scale. Together these two step changes open up new routes to combine genomics and synthetic biology to synthesize and access previously inaccessible natural products and analogs for medicinal, agricultural and industrial applications. Anne has also developed and co-ordinates the Science, Art and Writing (SAW) Initiative, a cross-curricular science education outreach programme (www.sawtrust.org).

Prof., Dr. Sc. Efim A. Rezvan (born 1957), Editor-in-Chief of “Manuscripta Orientalia, International Journal for Oriental MSS Research”, Deputy Director, Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the International Center for Islamic Studies (St. Petersburg), author of 14 monographs and more than 300 scholarly works published in the Russian, English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Uzbek, Finnish, Chinese and Persian languages. Founder of academic school "Ethnography of the Qur’an." Since 2006 he is honorable professor of the UNESCO Chair for inter-religious dialogue for inter-cultural understanding (Saint-Petersburg).

His main scientific achievements are connected with the study of archival and manuscript collections of St. Petersburg. The study of archival collections has resulted in a series of monographs dedicated to the history of Russian-Arabic relations. His several-years long research of the Qur'an, the history of Qur'anic exegetics, publications and translations of the Holy Book of Islam, resulted in a monograph entitled "The Qur'an and Its World" — a modern introduction into Qur'anic studies that has aroused great interest in Russia and abroad. An important period of his scientific activities was connected with discovery, attribution, scientific description and publication of one of the oldest and most important Qur'anic manuscripts — the so-called "Qur'an of ‘Uthman", that for almost five hundred years was worshiped by Central Asian Muslims as the first original manuscript of the Holy text.

Efim Rezvan was a member of the Editorial Committee of the international research and publication project "Early Qur'ans. The Era of the Prophet, the Right Guided Caliphs and the Umayyades" (Noseda Foundation, Italy). He is the Head of the “Corpus Coranicum Petropolitana” international research project and one of the authors of the system of automatic recognition of the Arabic script that today is one of the most popular systems in the Arabic world. He is Editor-in-chief of the series entitled "Culture and Ideology of the Muslim East", head of the Editorial board of the series entitled "Kunstkamera — Archives", member of editorial boards of a number of Russian and foreign scientific journals and periodicals, and organizer of a number of international scientific conferences held in St. Petersburg. He has lectured in the Oriental and Philosophical Faculties of the St. Petersburg State University, and in the Moscow Center of Stanford University (USA). He has organized and participated in a number of historical and ethnographical expeditions in Central Asia, Arabia, India, Far East and Africa.

He is one of organizers of the exhibition "From Bagdad to Isfahan. He has acted as a head of a number of exhibition projects that have been successfully carried out in the MAE RAS, such as "Oriental Dreams. Nicolas Baldovini received his PhD at the Université de Corse in 2000, where he worked under the supervision of Pr. J. Casanova on natural product chemistry and the use of ¹³C-NMR as a tool for the analysis of complex mixtures. After two post-doctoral stays in synthetic chemistry at the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg (France) with Pr. G. Solladié, and the University of Tokyo (Japan) in the group of Pr. K. Narasaka, he was appointed assistant professor in 2003 at the University Côte d'Azur (Nice, France). His current research interests are focused on the analytical and synthetic chemistry of odorant compounds, mainly on the analysis of natural raw materials and the identification of key odorants, the development of synthetic methods to produce fragrant substances, and the structure-odor relationships.

Shahina A Ghazanfar has worked in the Sultanate of Oman (Sultan Qaboos University), Fiji (University of the South Pacific), West Africa (Bayero University, Nigeria), and Pakistan (Pakistan Agriculture Research Council) and has made major contributions to the study of the floras of these countries. She joined the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, UK, in 2001, initially as co-editor for the Flora of Tropical East Africa, and then as Head of the Temperate Regional Team. She is author of the Flora of Oman (4 volumes) and Editor of the Flora of Iraq.
Shahina has particular interest and expertise in the restoration, conservation and biogeography of the floras of the Arabian Peninsula, and in the use of native plants and their potential as horticultural plants. Her interests and research extend to the study of salt loving plants, and those of medicinal, historical and economic importance in the Arabian Peninsula and the Middle East on the whole. She is interested in vernacular names and the etymology of names of medicinal plants and those of religious and cultural value in the Middle East. She has authored several books, chapters in edited books, and written peer reviewed papers on the floras and vegetation of Arabia and the Middle East.
Shahina has also been involved in major landscaping and horticulture projects in the UAE using native plants, and regularly advises on the use of native plants for sustainable restoration of degraded habitats.
Shahina A Ghazanfar has a PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK, and an MSc from Punjab University, Pakistan.

Frans Bongers, professor in tropical forest ecology, Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Working on frankincense issues in the Horn of Africa since 1997, with field work first in Eritrea, later in Ethiopia. Has been leading a large interdisciplinary research team focussing on sustainable use and management of frankincense resin, trees and forests. Currently he is working on a book on frankincense, covering most species and many aspects. Other work is on forest biodiversity in West Africa and Latin America, and on forest succession and restoration in wet and dry tropical areas.
