The Department of Mass Communication at Sultan Qaboos University is one of the leading academic departments at the university. It was established in 1987 with the aim of training and qualifying Omani cadres in various media fields, such as journalism, e-publishing, public relations, radio, and television. The department seeks to provide students with the scientific knowledge and practical skills necessary to meet the challenges of the labor market in these fields.

Objectives and Vision

The vision of the Department of Mass Communication is to be among the leading departments in the field of mass communication in the Sultanate of Oman and the region. The department aims to provide qualified specialists equipped with the knowledge and professional skills that meet market needs.

Academic Programs

The department offers bachelor's programs in media and postgraduate programs. The master's program began in 2005, with 90 students graduating from it by 2023. The doctoral program was recently approved and will begin receiving students in the fall of 2023.

Department Staff Members

The Department of Mass Communication includes a group of members specialized in various media fields who contribute to education and enrich scientific research across different media and communication specializations. The department members have extensive experience in the media field, contributing to a comprehensive educational environment for students. The department is headed by Professor Dr. Abdullah Al-Kindi, a Professor of Journalism.

Student Activities

The department supports student activities through the "Media Creativity" group, which provides an environment rich in opportunities for students to develop their skills and participate in various media events.

Cooperation with Media Institutions

The department is an active member of the joint committee between the university and the Ministry of Information. An advisory committee has also been formed, comprising an elite group of media leaders in Oman to enhance cooperation and develop academic plans. Additionally, there are several partnerships between the department and various media outlets aimed at enriching the training process for students.

Academic Accreditation

The department obtained international academic accreditation for its bachelor's and master's programs from the German Foundation for Accreditation of Academic Programs (AQAS) in 2019, reflecting the quality of the education and programs provided.
